January often brings talk of setting new goals—only for many to abandon them by mid-month. Instead of resolutions, I believe in setting intentions for the year.

To set meaningful intentions, you first need to understand your starting point. Life gets busy, and it’s hard to zoom out and see the road you’ve traveled. Here’s what I do each January to take inventory and set myself up for success:

Measure Your Health Beyond the Scale

  • Use an InBody Scan: Weight is only one measure of health. InBody scans give insights into:
    • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
    • Body Fat Percentage
    • Muscle Mass
I’ve tracked my scans since 2019 using my Orangetheory app, and it’s fascinating to see trends over time—through life events, injuries, and focused health efforts.

Tip: Haven’t done a scan this year? Most Orangetheory locations offer them for $25 or less.

Track Your Blood Work

  • Regular lab work helps you optimize your health with informed supplementation.
  • I recommend Function Health by Dr. Mark Hyman, which tests over 100 labs with a recheck six months later.
    • Cost: $499/year (often less than using insurance!)
    • Results include optimal ranges and supplement recommendations.
  • Keeping a file of your labs over the years can provide valuable insights.

Monitor Your Financial Health

  • New this year: I created a spreadsheet listing all investments and debts.
  • Goal: Increase net worth annually by identifying what’s working and what’s not.

Rate Key Life Areas

I score these areas on a scale of 1–10:
  • Family
  • Field (Career)
  • Fun
  • Finances
  • Faith
  • Friends
  • Fitness
This simple exercise helps me pinpoint areas needing focus. From there, I create a plan to improve my lowest scores.

 Remember:

  • Decide ahead of time how to handle the days you don’t “feel” like taking action. Having a plan can make all the difference.
